Pocketbooks make me think of my grandmother and her friends. They all live in Southern California and have known each other for a lifetime. They have more fun than anyone I know. Luncheons, cocktails parties, bridge games, visitors, you name it they do it. They may be old in age, but not it spirit. One thing is for sure; they always dress to the nines and are never without the perfect pocketbooks. Their pocketbooks are the perfect size: not so big that you throw their backs out but not so small that they have to leave their checkbooks at home. And of course they have pocketbooks to match every outfit. I have spent many an hour in my grandmother’s closet coveting her collection of pocketbooks. She has even bestowed a few of her favorite pocketbooks on her granddaughters.
But despite what you might think, the term “pocketbooks” is not just for our grandmothers. One of my best friends, who is from the South, uses “pocketbooks” exclusively when she refers to handbags.
